UPDATE: Police cars filled the streets of the 1400 block of Birch Court, in the Blackhawk Public Housing complex Tuesday night, after responding to a call of shots fired.
The victim, 22-year-old Lanair Jones-Sullivan, died of gunshot wounds to the head. The coroner says he was also shot several times in the torso.
“They did resuscitative efforts and did whatever they could to bring him back, but with that many gun shot wounds he was not able to survive, said Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia.”
Housing Authority officials say they believe the victim was targeted.
“He was visiting someone and just standing outside, when a car came through and this incident happened,” said CEO of the Rockford Housing Authority, Ron Clewer. “It appears it was not a random incident.”
That’s because Jones-Sullivan was recently out of jail after being arrested in January 2014 for unlawful use of a firearm, no FOID card and contempt of court.
Now police are looking for his killer.
Clewer says community help is needed to get him off the streets.
“Seeing that engagement by residents, saying we want to be a part of the solution, is imperative,” said Clewer.
RHA is also working with Rosecrantz to console the families.
“There were children present last night when this happened,” said Clewer. “There were adults present when that happened and people saw things that they shouldn’t see.”
“There’s always multiple victims, whether it was just one person shot and killed or injured, but its their family and their friends who are affected-who may or may not be involved in any kind of crimes,” said Rockford Police Department Chief Dan O’Shea.
Police believe the suspects fled in a red impala.
The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call Rockford Police or Crimestoppers.
