UPDATE (7/11/16): The woman shot and killed on 8th Avenue Saturday evening has been identified as Briana Stamper, 28, of Rockford.
An investigation is ongoing.
Family and friends sat grieving outside their home Sunday morning, just hours after a 28-year old woman was shot and killed in the front yard
Residents tell Eyewitness News it all began Saturday night when a group of people got into an argument over a woman. They say the cops were called to the house for that incident…. but by then the fight had already clamed down, but residents say just ten minutes after police left the house, the suspect returned firing off 5 to 6 shots, then fleeing through the yard and down 5th street.
Those shots striking the 28 year old, who residents say wasn’t even the intended target. One neighbor — who wanted to stay completely anonymous — says her heart breaks for the woman’s family.
“It’s a very sad situation because that’s a mother, a daughter, a sister that’s not there,” the resident said. “Her children her parents it’s not fair to anyone.”
One of the Rockford Police Strong Neighborhoods House’s is not even a block from the shooting scene, but isn’t open on the weekends. Still residents all echoed the same message Sunday: The senseless gun violence needs to stop.
“It’s frustrating to know that some children are going to be without their mother,” the resident added. “A mother is going to be without her daughter. A father is going to be without their daughter,(and) for what? It’s sad. Things need to change.”
An autopsy is schedule on the woman Monday.
