Update: One woman is dead after a collision at the intersection of Springfield and Cunningham.

Police say shortly before 8am Monday morning, Winnebago County Police began to conduct a traffic stop for a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed near State Street and Meridian.  Once the vehicle began to flee, police stopped pursuing at Springfield Avenue.

The suspect then collided with a vehicle who was traveling east on Cunningham Rd, splitting the car in half and killing the driver.

The suspect vehicle ended up in a field next to Springfield Avenue and burst into flames.  The female driver and male passenger of the suspect vehicle were transported to the hospital with serious and life-threatening injuries, respectively.

Police say they believe the vehicle fled because the male passenger was in possession of heroin.

An investigation is ongoing.
