UPDATE: Teen Dies After Drowning at Belvidere’s Spencer Park


UPDATE (7/11/2017) – The teen, submerged in Blue Pond for 30 minutes on Tuesday, has died.

The Winnebago County Coroner says the 16-year-old was rushed to SwedishAmerican Hospital, then transferred to Mercyhealth for a higher level of care. Despite the medical staff’s best efforts, the boy passed away.

His identity is not being released at this time.


A late morning of swimming turns into a frantic half hour search for the missing teen.

Police and sheriff’s deputies, ambulances, rescue boats, and a medical helicopter rush to Blue Pond in Spencer Park earlier this afternoon.  The mass water rescue taking place for a 16 year old male who ended up underwater in the 50 foot pond.  He and a friend were out on a fishing pier, when the victim decided to get in the water.

Dan Kane, the Executive Director for the Boone County Conservation District said, “It is a restricted area.  No swimming or wading is permitted, just fishing.  Unfortunately, the youth were in the water.”

A staff member of the conservation district made the first call at noon, bringing Boone County police officers and firefighters to the scene.  Free diving was the first attempt at rescuing the teen while the fire department then brought in 6 divers to assist with the rescue.

Chief Al Hyser of the Belvidere Fire Department said ,”We had police officers who were in the water along with some of my fire personnel.  We had them tagged off, and they were attempting to rescue to no avail.  One of our divers, Belvidere divers, did find the victim. This call came in at twelve o’clock.  We found the victim I believe to be thirty minutes later.”

Chief Hyser said the rescue was a team effort to try the save the teenager,  with a great deal of risk for the rescuers.  He said, “We had Belvidere Police Department who was down here, guys who were risking their lives down here for this youth, great effort on their behave.  Boone County Sheriff’s Department was down here as well.  These people were free diving to try and find this young man.”

The victim was taken to the Swedish American hospital in Belvidere, but his condition has not been released.
