UPDATE: Winnebago County Coroner William Hintz has identified the boy who died in Monday morning’s house fire as 22-month-old Matthew Raines.

The infant died from exposure to carbon monoxide.

The fire started around 1:45 a.m. in the 700 block of Winnebago Street. Firefighters arrived and began rescue efforts to save a 22-month-old boy from a second story room. The child was removed and taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Rockford Fire Department says the four people who made it out of the house were all minors; the oldest person home at the time of the fire was 16-years-old.

“Family members outside said there was a two-year-old child in the upstairs bedroom,” Rockford Fire Chief Derek Bergsten said Monday morning. “They conducted search and rescue operations, they ended up finding the child in the upstairs bedroom. The child was removed and transported to a local hospital where we were later notified that the child succumbed to his injuries from the fire. The child did pass away.”

Four others were able to escape the house safely. The family will not be able to return to the home due to the damages. The Red Cross is assisting them.

The cause is under investigation. Damage estimates are at $40,000.
