UPDATE – The Winnebago County Coroner says the victim is a 17-year-old male from Rockford. His name is being withheld until family is notified.

An autopsy is pending.

The death is under investigation by the Rockford and Canadian National Police Department.

Rockford police are on the scene at the railroad tracks on Harrison Ave after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a train.

Police received the call sometime after 6:30 p.m. Thursday.  They arrived to find an older teenaged male dead beside the train tracks.  They say it appears he was hit by a Canadian National train, the crew apparently unaware they had hit a pedestrian as they continued along their route.

Investigators say they have not yet identified the body.

Both Rockford police and investigators with Canadian National are investigating how it happened.
