At approximately 8:00 a.m. Sunday, Rockford Fire crews responded to an apartment fire on the 1600 block of 7th Street.

Smoke was billowing from the 2nd floor when the firefighters arrived. Several adults and children were inside the home at the time, but they and their pets were able to escape. One adult man was treated for smoke inhalation, and was later transported to SwedishAmerican Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The fire was contained within 15 minutes. The upper floor suffered the most damage, as the downstairs living area suffered minor water damage.

The fire was the result of a 4-year-old child playing with a lighter in the bedroom on the 2nd floor of the building.

The loss is valued at $35,000.
