UPDATED: Fire crews on scene at house & garage fire in Winnebago

News

UPDATED 5:46 p.m. – At approximately 3 p.m. on Friday, several fire crews responded to a garage and house fire on the 1100 block of West State Road in Winnebago.

A grass fire spread to a garage and then a house. An Illinois State Trooper saw the fire as he was passing and ran up to the house to see if anyone was inside. The occupant who answered the door was unaware that her house was on fire. The Trooper then worked to get the occupants out of the residence as the fire crews arrived.

No one was injured.

Fifteen animals resided at the property; most have been rescued as of this writing.

Damage to the garage is estimated to be a complete loss. Firefighters are still combating hotspots on the main structure.

West State Street / Hwy 20 remains closed between Winnebago Road and Keith Road, and will remain so for the next several hours. Troopers plan to open the westbound lane as time allows.
