UPDATE (10/5/18) – The Winnebago County Coroner identified the victim as Jarvis Wilder, 28, of Rockford.
One of the victims shot on Newburg Road last night has died.
“I heard several noises. At first, it sounded like fireworks,” said neighbor Carlos Quinton.
Quinton was one of several residents on the busy street who heard the gunshots.
“[There were] eight to ten, it sounded like to me. It was real quick,” he said. “After I sat there a second, I decided I better get up and look out the back window, and then I went out around the side of my house and seen my neighbor in the back. And he’d seen the guy jump a fence.”
The shooting happened around 6 p.m. on Wednesday night. A 28-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman were shot. Both were taken to local hospitals, but the man was later pronounced dead.
On Thursday, neighbors were in shock.
“A lot of older people too, that’s in the area,” Quinton said. “So you just wouldn’t think something like that can happen, but it can happen anywhere, anytime, and that’s what you got to be careful with.”
Two candles were placed next to the driveway of the house where the shooting took place Thursday, in remembrance of the man who lost his life.
While the Newburg shooting was the only deadly shooting on Wednesday, two others took place in Rockford overnight as well.
Police say there is no indication the shootings are connected.
“The individuals who were involved were believed to be known to each other, so it’s not random shootings we have taking place in our community,” Carla Redd, the Assistant Deputy Chief of Investigations for the Rockford Police Department, said.
Police believe Wednesday’s unseasonably warm fall temperatures played a role in the sudden burst of violence.
“With the warmer days coming into play there are more individuals that are outside if you will that may not otherwise be, they may be inside their homes. So it’s just a matter of who’s having conflict with someone and at what point they may run across each other,” Redd said.
The identify of the victim has not yet been released.
