Double the amount of ballots were cast in Tuesday night’s primary election compared to the last non-presidential primary election in Rockford.
According to the Rockford Board of Elections, 25,129 ballots were cast Tuesday night of 83,887 registered Rockford voters. That amounts to a turnout of 29.96%. In comparison, for the 2014 general primary election, the last election that didn’t include a presidential candidate, 11,939 ballots were cast in Rockford of 81,980 registered voters, or a turnout of 14.56%.
The highest turnout in recent years for a primary election was during the 2016 general primary, which did include presidential candidates. That year, 32,061 ballots were cast, amounting to a turnout of 40.08%.
