Walmart Announces 3,600 Veteran Hires in Illinois

As part of an ongoing commitment to veterans, Walmart announced this week, ahead of Memorial Day, that they’ve hired more than 3,600 veterans in Illinois since 2013.

It’s part of the company’s ‘Veterans Welcome Home Commitment’ made in May of 2013. Walmart has hired nearly 131,000 veterans nationwide, including 3,640 here in Illinois. More than 15,000 of the veterans nationwide have been promoted to jobs with higher pay.

“I was a bike builder for about a month once Walmart realized I had a background as a mechanic in the Army they promoted me to technician,” said Jason Champion, Auto Care Services Manager at a Rockford Walmart. “They respect my skills and my discipline and have always compensated me fairly.”

On Memorial Day 2013, Walmart introduced their veteran commitment project, which guaranteed a job offer to any eligible, honorable discharged U.S. veteran who was within 12 months of active duty.

Walmart hopes to hire 250,000 veterans by the end of 2020.
