A teenager is in critical condition after being pulled from the water at Lake Louise Campground in Byron Monday afternoon.

Fire officials say the 16-year-old swam into a “No Swimming” area as he was attempting to retrieve a beach ball that had floated away. The boy was under water for at least ten minutes before being rescued. He was taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition at Swedish American hospital in Rockford.

The water rescue call came around 1 p.m. to the campground located off of Illinois Rt. 2 near Byron.

The victim’s identity has not been released.
