Weight Loss Program, Offered in Rockford, Found to Offer ‘Fastest’ Results

News

Behind the walls of OSF St. Anthony’s Medical Center in Rockford is a program, recently recognized by ‘U.S. News and World Report’ as one of the faster ways to safely lose weight.  Participants in the program have lost on average two-to-four pounds a week and keep it off.

The program, known by its brand name HMR, uses a combination of snack bars and entrees, but most importantly, nutrition shakes, to help participants cut calories.

Nathan Hamman, Manager of Wellness and Weight Management at OSF Saint Anthony, says it’s not so much the food but the program itself which makes all the difference.

“It takes the decisions away,” he says. “It’s sort of like having to go cold turkey from cigarettes, [that’s] kind of what I compare it to. When you go to all meal replacements, it kind of takes out the decisions and that is the hardest part, for a lot of people… if they’re trying to eat healthy, they don’t know what to do.”

And while HMR products can be purchased online, Hamman says using them in conjunction with the OSF Weight Loss program is what gets real results.

“You can do meal replacements from anywhere, [but] It’s coming in and getting … education by trained professionals and then using the meal replacements [that allows you to] get the weight off quickly,” Hamman says.

The program works in two phases.  In Phase One, participants consume three shakes and two meals a day, seven days a week, for 13 weeks while attending weekly classes.  Besides the shakes, there are 15 entrees to choose from with only about 200 calories apiece.  But despite the 1000 calorie per day limit, Hamman says his clients still feel full.

Phase Two gradually reduces the meal replacements while participants are taught to make better meal choices.

“As you move onto the Phase Two of the program, it’s about recipe modification, label reading, dining out, and what you can do in order to keep your calories low, and where you need to be and then using the meal replacements intermittently,” he says.

The plan also involves moderate exercise.
