The Winnebago County Health Department finds the first evidence of West Nile Virus in the area.

A mosquito pool in Machesney Park tested positive for the virus.  Health officials say it’s not surprising since the virus has been present in Winnebago County for the past 15 years.

They say it’s important to protect yourself and your family from being bitten by an infected mosquito by practicing the three “R’s’: reduce exposure, wear repellent, and report dead birds to the health department.
