Whiteside County police departments joined their counterparts in Lee County to help people overcome their drug addictions.
The Safe Passage Initiative Partnership between the counties officially took effect today. Under the program, officers who come across addicts can help get them into treatment, rather than put them behind bars.
On Tuesday, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) took to the senate floor to talk about the success of programs like Safe Passage in Illinois. “The jails had been filled by petty criminals stealing, burglarizing, trying to feed their habits,” said Durbin. “Now, they’re in rehab.”
Officials say 34 people are being treated in Lee County since the program started in September.
