Winnebago County residents against a proposed freight rail line running through their backyards make their voices heard once again.
Dozens packed the Shirland Fire Dept. Wednesday evening. They’re upset over the Great Lakes Basin Railroad Project, which would run north near the Rockford Airport through rural parts of the county and into Wisconsin. County board members were on hand to explain in detail about the project. Those in attendance say the project is too risky for the county to take on.
“It might be good for the national picture until something happens,” warned Gary Faulkner who’s against the project. “We don’t have the infrastructure to take care of spills. The railroads of the United States aren’t even required to carry liability insurance.”
A rally against the project will be held tomorrow at a farm in the 8500 block of Cunningham Road. It’s scheduled to start at 11am.
