Winnebago County Sheriff to continue providing 911 service, thank to multi-county coalition

Thanks to a new agreement between local municipalities, 911 services will continue be handled throughout Winnebago County by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.

Approximately 18 months ago, the County voted to discontinue providing 911 services due to budget constraints.

At that time, the County proposed consolidating 911 operations through a third party.

The City of Loves Park and the City of Machesney Park formed a coalition of all nine municipalities served by the County to save the service.

Monday, an agreement was announced, through which each community will pay a fair share to have the Winnebago County Sheriff continue to direct day-to-day operations of the 911 emergency service.

Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana, Loves Park Mayor Gregory Jury, and Machesney Park Village Administrator Tim Savage held a press conference Monday morning to announce the new agreement.
