A Winnebago County Sheriff’s deputy was injured Wednesday while assisting a driver with a broken down vehicle on the side of the road in Machesney Park.

Around 9:45 p.m., Deputy Frank Venture was helping jump a car’s engine on North 2nd Street at Melborne Avenue when a motorcycle crashed into the rear of the vehicle he was attending to. Deputy Venture was taken to a local hospital, treated for minor injuries and released.

The motorcyclist, Daniel Jenkins, 53, was also hospitalized for minor injuries. He has been charged with reckless driving and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers of ‘Scott’s Law.’ Also known as the “Move Over Law,” it requires motorists in Illinois to reduce speed and use caution when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle with flashing lights.
