Winnebago County leaders say ‘no thanks’ to a proposed freight rail line.
The board unanimously rejected Great Lakes Basin Railroad’s proposal to lay tracks through rural parts of the county. The route would have cut through farmers’ fields, wetlands and over oil pipelines.
Many residents, over the past month and a half, rallied against the rail line proposal, saying it could harm the environment and reduce their property values.
Board member Eli Nicolosi says the board realizes that whether or not Great Lakes Basin Railroad’s line is approved is ultimately a Federal decision, but believes Thursday’s vote from residents will send a strong message to Washington.
