Woman Arrested for Reckless Driving, Officer Shoots Dog in Self-Defense During Chase

News

A Rockford police officer chases down a fleeing suspect and ends up shooting a dog in self defense.

It happened around 1:00 pm Sunday afternoon in the area of Oakwood Avenue and Andrews Street. Police say they tried to stop a vehicle but the driver didn’t pull over.

Instead, the 22-year-old female left the car near the 200 block of Miriam Avenue and fled on foot.

Authorities say when they tried to arrest her, a dog ran up and attacked the officer. The officer says he shot the animal in self defense. The dog has been taken to the animal clinic for a non-life threatening injury.

The suspect is facing several traffic and criminal charges.
