The increase in crime is pushing some stateliners to learn to protect themselves in case of an attack.

The Excel Academy of Tae Kwon Do in Rockford offered women a self-defense seminar to teach attendees self defense techniques.

Instructors showed people how to talk their way out of a situation, use hand-to-hand combat to escape, as well as how to use self-defense in a life-or-death situations.

The class also emphasized the importance of simply being aware of your surroundings.

“With the way the world is today, that it’s important that as many people know how to defend themselves or at least are aware of different things they could do to be better prepared for any kind of attack,” said Master Instructor and Excel Academy Owner Bennie Gonzalez.

Gonzalez also said it’s never too late to learn.

They host these trainings about three times every year.
