A team of writers and executives developing a new comedy series based on the film A League of Their Own is coming to Rockford for the five-day celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Rockford Peaches.
Writers Will Graham (Mozart in the Jungle) and Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) are working on a 30-minute adaptation of the 1992 Penny Marshall movie starring Tom Hanks and Geena Davis for Sony Pictures Televsion, to be aired on Amazon Prime.
The movie focuses on the Rockford Peaches during the first year of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1943.
The 75th Anniversary events will take place at the Coronado Theater, City Market, the State Street shopping district and Beyer Stadium.
Events kick off May 30th at 6 p.m. at the Coronado Theater, and include appearances by Megan Cavanagh, who played Marla Hooch in A League of Their Own; former AAGPBL players Mary Moore, Shirley Burkovich and Maybelle Blair and former Rockford Peach Helen “Sis” Waddell-Wyatt; the kickoff of the Women’s Baseball World Cup trophy tour; an appearance by Ila Borders, the first woman to receive a baseball scholarship and the first woman to start a game as a pitcher in an integrated men’s professional baseball league; and Kim Ng, the senior vice president for baseball operations with Major League Baseball.
