YWCA hosts annual ‘Week Without Violence’ awareness event

More than a decade ago, the Northwestern Illinois YWCA started their annual week-long “Week Without Violence” campaign.

The organization will be hosting different social media events and seminars throughout the week, teaching residents about when and how to intercede in a domestic violence situation.

“We’ve heard a lot about this community’s problem with domestic violence, so [the YWCA] brings to the forefront and dedicates an entire week [to] looking for solutions for gender-based violence and making people aware that it even exists,” said CEO Kris Machajewski.

The YWCA is also giving out information about the Violence Against Women Act, a federal legislation which imposed automatic restitution on convicted offenders, and is set to expire at the end of the month.
