They were cheering for the cheerleaders Monday afternoon in Boone County.
At Belvidere North and at North Boone assemblies were held at the high schools to recognize their competitive cheerleading squads. Belvidere North won its third straight state championship this past Saturday in the coed division. The Blue Thunder had the highest point total in State history.
Senior Giana Enciso has been on all three state championship teams. “For me this one is more special just because it’s my senior year and all the work that I’ve put in these last few years has just paid off my final year.”
“I started crying once we got off the mat. We did so good and I was just so proud of everyone.”
“It feels amazing!,” said senior cheerleader Payton Keithley. “A three-peat it’s really rare and so we were really proud to be able to do this.” “The thing about cheer you can only do and you can only control what you can do and we felt that we did everything we could possibly do to bring our state championship home.”
North Boone’s cheerleaders took third place in the small school division. That’s the best finish ever by North Boone. It was also the first time any North Boone team in any sport had placed at State since the football team finished second in 1992.
“It’s the most amazing feeling ever!,” said North Boone cheerleader Kylie Nelson.
“I definitely cried,” said North Boone cheerleader Hannah Underwood of her reaction when she heard the announcement that North Boone had finished third. “It was really exciting. Probably the best day of my life.”
