ROCKFORD - At the moment it's Harlem and Rockford East battling it out for the top spot in the NIC-10 boys basketball race. That battle will be front-and-center Wednesday evening.
The Huskies will host the E-Rabs. East is undefeated in the conference. The E-Rabs were the preseason favorites. Harlem has one conference loss. That was in their conference opener when they lost at the buzzer at Belvidere North.
Since that loss Harlem has won seven straight NIC-10 games. The last three were blowout wins over Guilford (55-32), Boylan (70-45) and Freeport (9-52). Those results got the E-Rabs' attention.
"They're just playing hard. They're playing their butts off," says East senior guard Chris Burnell. "Every game I've been seeing they're giving 100 percent all. David (Williams) and Treye (Tucker) they're both like family, but I'm going to give them their props they've been doing their thing lately."
"They're playing with confidence and they're playing like they're hungry," says East coach Roy Sackmaster. "They're going out and they're just out-competing teams. They're playing definitely with a chip on their shoulder and they're showing that. We're going to have a battle on our hands here come on Wednesday."
