Byron High School welcomes a New Head Coach to the Boys Basketball Program. Matt Huels was approved at the May 23rd board meeting and will take over the leadership role for the 2019-20 school year.
Coach Huels comes to Byron with 16 years of coaching experience at various levels. Matt’s most recent coaching position was at Guilford High School where he was the Head Coach of the Girls program since 2015.
In 2016-17, he led the Lady Vikings to their first winning season in over 20 years.
Huels teams at Guilford went (10-17), (15-13), (10-18) and (17-14).
Coach Huels also assisted in the Harlem Boys program 3 years and in the Guilford Boys program for 2 years.
“We are very pleased to have Matt Huels as our next Head Basketball Coach”, said Jay Mullens, principal at Byron High School. “We are extremely excited about the level of energy that Coach Huels will bring to the Byron High School program”,
Huels graduated from Rochelle Township High School in 2002. He graduated from Northern Illinois University in 2007 with a Bachelor’s in Education and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Education, with an emphasis in Autism Education, through the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2017. Matt currently teaches at McIntosh Elementary School as a Physical Education teacher.
Huels lives in Rockford with his wife Erin, their 5 year-old son Carson and 2 year-old daughter Teagan.
Huels replaces Tom Schmidt. Schmidt resigned in early April after 20 highly successful seasons at Byron. During that time his record was 223-104. Last season the Tigers were 24-7.
