Hononegah’s season ends on walk-off homerun

Hononegah’s run of success on the softball field came to an end Tuesday at the 4A Hampshire Sectional. The Indians lost to McHenry 7-5 in a back-and-forth game.

Hononegah was sailing a long with a 2-0 lead behind starting pitcher Ashton Melaas. But Mchenry got to her for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Hononegah answered with three runs in the top of the seventh to regain the lead 5-4. The Indians were aided by two errors by McHenry’s shortstop.

But Hononegah couldn’t hold that one run lead. In the bottom of the 7th inning McHenry struck for three runs against Hononegah relief pitcher Emna Schroeder. The final two came on a walk-off homerun to centerfield by McHenry’s Kate Funk.
