Malone resigns at East

Sports Connection

Rockford East High School is looking for a new varsity girls head basketball coach. Larnell L.A. Malone has resigned.

Malone had held the job for five seasons. He tells me he has four children under the age of ten and he needs to make more time for them.

In a letter that he submitted to his staff, players and parents this week Malone wrote, “Being a head coach takes an incredible amount of time and energy. At this time in my life I believe it is time for new leadership to take over. This has been one of the most difficult decisions of my life.”

“I believe I am leaving this program in better shape than I received it.”

Malone took over a downtrodden program at East and made it highly competitive. Two seasons ago the  E-Rabs were 25-7 and 13-3 in the NIC-10.

Malone’s departure means there are two openings in District 205 for a girls head basketball coach. Jefferson is also looking for one. Maurice Smith will not be returning there.

Malone’s Records as East Head Coach:
2014-15: 14-14, 7-9
2015-16: 14-13, 7-9
2016-17: 25-7, 13-3
2017-18: 18-12, 12-4
2018-19: 10-22, 5-13
