The Big Northern Conference’s two top players and two of the top teams elevated their games Tuesday evening in a shootout in Rockford.
6-9 center Andrew Morrissey of Winnebago took advantage of a smaller Lutheran lineup to score 44 points in Winnebago’s 86-74 win.
Lutheran led 40-35 at halftime on its home court after junior Kenny Strawbridge poured in 25 first half points. He finished the night with 37. Winnebago had a one point lead 57-56 after three quarters. Strawbridge was in and out of the lineup in the fourth quarter with a bloody nose when Winnebago pulled away for the win.
Strawbridge at 6’4 spent most of the night trying to guard Morrissey because Strawbridge is the tallest player on Lutheran’s team. But Strawbridge didn’t have the bulk to keep Morrissey off the boards. Morrissey probably had 25 or more rebounds. (Winnebago’s coaches tabulate rebound totals after watching the game film.)
Winnebago improves to 21-1 overall and 8-0 in the conference. Lutheran is now 11-14, 4-2.
