NIC-10 MVP Burnell commits to Kirkwood Community College

NIC-10 basketball MVP Chris Burnell will be taking his talents to Iowa in the fall to play ball for Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Burnell tweeted out his decision late Thursday night.

Burnell led the Rockford East E-Rabs to a fourth place finish in the Illinois 4A State Tournament in March. He averaged 14.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. He was named Honorable Mention All-State by the AP and 2nd team All-State by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.

Burnell is the only player in NIC-10 history to top 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 400 assists in his career. He is East’s all-time leading scorer with 1,663 points and all-time leader in assists with 439. He also ranks third in East history in rebounds with 674.

Kirkwood has a highly successful men’s junior college basketball program. The Eagles went 31-4 this past season under head coach Bryan Peters. they were 24-6 the previous season and they were champions of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).
