District 205 administrators have turned the district’s annual basketball Tip-Off Classic into perhaps the marquee tip-off event in Illinois. The field will be stronger than ever this year with the announcement that defending 4A state champion Chicago Whitney Young has joined the field.
This will be Whitney Young’s first appearance in the four-year old tournament. The Dolphins not only won a state championship last season, they’ve won three championships in the last nine years. They’ve also had a second place finish during that period. Last season they were 27-5.
Whitney Young will play five games in the District 205 Tip-Off Classic which runs November 20-25. That includes a final game on the 25th against Rockford Auburn.
Other teams in the tournament field this year will be St. Rita, Hyde Park (last year’s champion), Perspective Charter School, Elgin Larkin, McArthury H.S. of Hollywood, Florida, Madison La Follette, Milwaukee Bay View and Janesville Parker.
Six local teams will also be in the tournament Auburn, East, Guilford, Jefferson, Belvidere and Freeport.
“This is by far the best field we have had yet,” says East coach Roy Sackmaster in a District 205 press release. “This has quickly become one of the premier Thanksgiving Tournaments in the state. To be able to draw teams as far away as Florida, to have the defending state champs start their season in our gym says a lot about the quality of this tournament.”
