The NIC-10 Boys Stars will be in for an major challenge when they face a loaded All-Area Stars team Saturday in the Rising Stars Classic at Rock Valley College.
This might be the most talented All-Area Team ever assembled.
Start with Dixon’s 6-7 All-State senior Isaiah Roby. Then there’s Winnebago’s 6-8 All-State center Brandon Suggs. Plus the state’s three-point king Zach Knobloch, and Genoa-Kingston scoring machine Tommy Lucca.
Other team members include Oregon’s Trevor Otten, Byron’s Dylan Van Lankvelt, Dakota’s Casey Brokhousen and DeKalb standouts Luke Davis and Michael Pollack. They’re being coached by DeKalb’s professor of basketball Al Biancalana.
It’s a team that doesn’t appear to have a weakness.
“The weakness is on the sideline,” says Biancalana laughing. “I just try to stay out their way. In games like this you really do just want to get out of the way and let the kids play and have some fun.”
So can these individual talents come together to form a strong team?
“Yea I think so,” says Roby. “I know a couple guys, I mean everybody’s friendly.”
How much would they like to beat the NIC-10?
“I really would like to beat them just because they’re the bigger schools. They think they’re better than us. They have more talent. It’s more competition over there,” says Suggs.
The NIC-10 stars will be led by Boylan’s Sam Fehrle and Luke McDermott, Auburn’s Trayvon Tyler, Jefferson’s Kaveon Rogers and Belvidere’s DeAnte Barnes.
The girls game will begin at 5:00 p.m. Saturday evening at Rock Valley College. The boys game will follow at 8:00 p.m.
