Basketball expected to return to the BMO for one day

ROCKFORD, Ill.-(WTVO/WQRF) It’s been a long time since basketball was played at the BMO Harris Bank Center outside of an appearance by the Harlem Globetrotters. That is expected to change soon.

The downtown Rockford arena is expected to host a pair of NBA G League preseason games on Friday, November 1st. One will likely involve the Bulls’ G League team the Windy City Bulls and the Bucks’ G League team the Wisconsin Herd.

Both teams are having issues scheduling the game with their own arenas. Two other G League teams that are having the same scheduling issues are also expected to play a preseason game in Rockford.

The G League is the NBA’s developmental league.

The BMO Harris Bank Center has an open date on the schedule for November 1. Officials from the arena have not made a formal announcement yet about the games.

Professional basketball games were common at the downtown arena from 1986 through 2006 when the CBA’s Rockford Lightning made their home there. These G League games could serve as a litmus test to gauge if there is currently any interest in the Rockford community in pro basketball downtown.
