No competitive cheerleading squad in the Stateline has had more success on the mats than Belvidere North has had in recent seasons.
This weekend the Blue Thunder will make their fourth straight appearance at State and their sixth overall. Last season they had their best finish placing second in the coed division. This time they’re shooting for number one.
“We keep progressing every single day. We work really hard at all of our pyramids, stunts, tumbling and like each year we just keep getting better and better,” says cheerleader Morgan Auman.
“I feel that our strength is… it’s everywhere,” says cheerleader Quinton Willingham. “We have a little bit of everything. We’re strong in tumbling, Coed, and we have some really good on the team.”
“We have a really good team this year,” says cheerleader Katelyn Kehrer. “We’re really pushing and striving to bring home a first place state trophy.”
“I feeling like there’s not really one spot that’s super hard in our routine,” says Auman. “I feel like every single spot has its difficult spots. We have girls that tumble constantly throughout. There are people who are constantly tumbling 24/7 in this routine. It’s just there’s always something going on.”
“We’ve been working since May,” adds Willingham. “We come in every day and we just…either weight lifting or its running or some type of game to get us ready for competition season.”
“We have to make sure that our performance is really through the roof,” says Kehrer. “We have to make sure we can hit our stunts and every aspect of the routing perfectly.”
North had the top score of all the Sectional Champions last week in Illinois. North won’t be the only Stateline team competing at State. Harlem will compete in the large school division. Lutheran, Byron and North Boone will compete in the small school division.
