Caledonia’s Max Kahler keeps making strides as a racer in the Rockford Speedway’s Late Model Division. Now in his third season the 16 year old is one of a handful of drivers who have a shot at winning the season championship as they head into this second half.
At the moment Kahler is the hottest driver in the late model division. He has won two of the last three feature races and in the third race he took second place.
“The first little bit of the season a couple races we were having awful luck getting caught up in trouble that wasn’t ours,” said Kahler. “We finally were able to stay out of trouble and we picked up two wins.”
His last feature win a week and a half ago was in the expanded Star Spangled 76 lap race as opposed to the usual 30 lap late model feature race at the track making that perhaps his favorite feature win yet.
“It was a lot more special. There were a lot more fans there, a lot more people.”
That same night Kahler doubled up. After winning the late model feature he turned right around, hopped in his super late model car, and he competed in his first ARCA series race..a 100 lap event. He took fourth place in that.
“It was fun!,” said Kahler. “It was really challenging to get between the regular late model and a super late model, but we were able to pull through it.” “The super late model runs bigger tires, a bigger engine. You drive them completely different, so going back and forth is a little bit of a struggle, but just a huge thanks to all my sponsors Windsor Auto Sales, everybody. Retool of Rockford. gets us the used tools that we need.”
Kahler says he’ll probably run another ARCA race at the Rockford Speedway’s National Short Track Championships in September. For now his goal is to try to win the late model season championship. At the moment he is in second place behind two-time Rockford Speedway Late Model season champion Michael Bilderback. Defending series champion Jon Reynolds Jr. is only four points behind Kahler. Dennis Smith Jr. and Jacob Vanoskey are also in the hunt.
“We just really need to continue on our success, get wins and get good finishes,” says Kahler.
The Late Models will be back in action this Saturday night at the Speedway.
