Northern Illinois University football coach Rod Carey has beaten multiple Big Ten teams while guiding the Huskies. He has won a MAC Championship. The only that that is missing from his resume is a victory in a bowl game. Carey’s teams are 0-5 in bowls.
That could change next Tuesday when the Huskies take on Alabama-Birmingham in the Boca Raton Bowl.
Carey is well aware of his goose egg in bowls but he says he doesn’t dwell on that personally.
“Yea that’s a disappointment for me but I’m never first on this thing and I never put myself first. It’s about these guys (his players). I don’t want to win the bowl for me. I want the guys to win the bowl for them and go out there and do something that we haven’t done around here in a while.”
Carey points out that there have been several successful college football coaches over the years who haven’t fared well in bowl games. He tossed out the name of former NIU coach Jerry Kill as an example.
Here is how NIU teams have done in bowl games since Carey took over right before NIU’s bowl busting appearance in the Orange Bowl in the 2012 season.
2012: Orange Bowl (Lost to Florida State 31-10)
2013: Poinsettia Bowl (Lost to Utah State 21-14)
2014: Boca Raton Bowl (Lost to Marshall 52-23)
2015: Poinsettia Bowl (Lost to Boise State 55-7)
2016: No bowl game
2017: Quick Lane Bowl (Lost to Duke 36-13)
