Champions Ball just around the corner to salute Rockford legends

The night when Rockford’s sports past meets the present is rapidly approaching. The District 205 Champions Ball and Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony will be held Saturday, February 23 at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center in Rockford.

The event doubles as a fundraiser for the Rockford Sports Coalition in addition to being a night to recognize and honor some of the greatest athletes and teams in the history of District 205.

This year the inductees are former East Basketball player Skip Thoren, former Auburn football and basketball player Bobby Anderson, East graduate and former Rockford Peach Jean Cione, former Jefferson swimmers Scott and Steve Kitzman, the undefeated 1964 West High footbal team, and Andie Goff a longtime coach in softball and basketball at East, Jefferson and Guilford.

It’s an event District 205 Director of Athletics Mat Parker looks forward to every year. “I think for me and probably for most people who attend who aren’t familiar with the inductees or didn’t live through an era where they were playing or coaching it’s just exciting to get to know them. Getting to know about their accomplishments not only while at Rockford Public Schools but going on to play at universities at the next level.”

This will be the seventh year for the Champions Ball. Parker says there will be a few changes during the social hour before the dinner.

“Instead of having the jazz band this year we’re going to have more of a tailgating type environment so there’s going to be the ability to challenge some of the East basketball players and maybe some of the inductees in Pop-A-Shot. There’s going to be a ring toss and some ping-pong.”
