ROCKFORD, IL — After taking a three year hiatus from the Greater Rockford Men’s Golf Classic Robert Dofflemyer returned this year and he made his presence felt. He ran away with the championship Sunday winning by five strokes.
Dofflemyer took a four stroke lead into the final round of the four-round, four-course event. He extended that final margin by another stroke after he shot a 70 at the Aldeen Golf Club.
Dofflemyer won this event in 2013 at the age of 18. He hadn’t played in recent years due to conflicts with his work schedule, but this year he was able to work his schedule out to fit in the tournament.
Dofflemyer made par on every hole on the front nine Sunday. He had an up-and-down back nine that included two bogeys on #11 and #15 and four birdies on holes 12, 14, 16 and 18.
He hit a spectacular approach shot on the 18th hole that set him up for an easy birdie putt to finish.
Dofflemyer says this victory feels different than his first one in 2013 felt.
“I think it feels a lot better. Definitely a new level of appreciation for the golf game. The last time I won I was in college playing golf as much as possible. Right now I’m working and just playing golf a couple times a week so it feels really cool.”
“I was able to kind of find my game this past month. Luckily it continued through this weekend and yea I’ll take it.”
Matt LaMarca finished in second place at one-under-par. He was the only other golfer to finish the tournament under par.
