CHAMPAIGN, IL — The Fighting Illini football team is back at work. The team held its first camp practice Friday morning.
They were on the practice fields on campus at the campus recreational fields a few blocks from Memorial Stadium.
The Fighting Illini were 4-8 last season….2-7 in the Big Ten. The last three years under Lovie Smith the Illini were 4-23 in conference play. Despite that Smith was given a two-year contract extension at the end of last season that runs through 2023.
Smith knows it’s time to start seeing more results on the field. But he’s being patient early on in camp.
“You know we had a lot of guys that stepped on the field for the first time, so we have them on video now. No positions are won the first day of practice in shorts, but it’s a start,” Smith told reporters.
The Fighting Illini are scheduled to hold their second workout Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until noon. Their season opener will be played at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 31st again Akron in Champaign.
