Forreston Aims For Second Title

Winning a state championship is the dream of a lifetime for most high school athletes. Forreston’s football players might get to experience that dream for a second time in three years.  The Cardinals will play in the 1A championship Friday morning in Champaign against Decatur St. Teresa.

The Cardinals who were in Champaign two years ago will never forget that experience. The stadium, the turf, the crowd and hoisting that big trophy.   That last part, the trophy is the key.

The Cardinals want another one and having been through this State experience before can only help them reach that goal.

“I’m going to be pretty calm,” says junior running back AJ Christensen. He played on special teams in the championship game two years ago. “I don’t know about the other guys. We’ve just got to focus on what we’re doing and we’ve got to play the game that we know we can play.”

“These guys have been grounded all year. I don’t expect that to change,” says head coach Denny Diduch. “I don’t expect the hoopla of State to change them at all. So far this week that’s played out.”

The Cardinals are 13-0. That’s only half the story. In their four playoff games they’ve outscored their opponents by an average score of 47-7.

So what does this wave of momentum feel like?

“It’s amazing!,” says senior receiver/defensive back Joseph Fiorello. “Especially my senior year I wouldn’t want it to go any other way. We’re undefeated and we have so many different guys playing different positions. Yea it feels really good.”

“It feels amazing,” says Christensen. “We’ve just got to stay humble and do our thing.”

The Cardinals will play Decatur St. Teresa Friday at 10 a.m. in Champaign. The game can be seen live on  Rockford’s MyNetwork TV.
