It was an exciting night for Fred Van Vleet at the United Center on Tuesday. Believe it or not it was first time in his career high school, college or pros that he’s ever had to the chance to play in a game at the U.C. He says he came here once as a kid as a fan and sat up in the seats. He says it was a night he’ll never forget. I’m sure this is a night he’ll never forget as well.
Van Vleet has made it halfway through his first NBA season and he says he couldn’t be happier with the ways things are working out. He’s adjusting well.
“It’s everything I thought it would be and more, says Van Vleet. “There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes. So many things that you would never imagine unless you’re actually in that position. Like I said it’s a dream come true. It’s a blessing. I’m not really just happy to be here I’m trying to make a stand and I think I’ve proven so far that I belong and that I’ll have a long career.”
The Raptors are overloaded with point guards right now. There are rumors swirling around this team that one of them could be dealt, perhaps Fred. I asked Van Vleet if those trade rumors were in the back of his mind.
“No I don’t think about it at all, says Van Vleet. “I just come in every day and try to be the best I can be. Be a professional and work hard like I said whatever decision they choose to make you’ve got to live with it and make the most of it, but I feel pretty good about where I’m at. Once you start letting those things start to creep into your mind it distracts you from the task at hand, so I’ve been pretty focused and not worried about it.”
Fred did not play against Bulls on Tuesday, and says he would prefer to stay with the Raptors. He’s extremely happy with their organization.
