Call them the ‘Fab Four’ of the Gymnastics Academy of Rockford. Four girls will be heading to the Gymnastics National Championships next week in Lansing, Michigan to compete at levels nine and ten.
Emily Kirkham, Paige Kirkham, Kaitlyn Higgins and Dani Petrousek. Their moves and their own words on giving it their all.
(Emily Kirkham, Gymnast) “One of the things my coaches always tell me is my tumbling is really high. Most of the judges really like that and then I just try and do my dance all out and try and leave everything on the floor.”
“It’s so exciting. This year putting in all the work and effort just paid off.”
“I just have to go out and be myself and whatever happens happens.”
(PAIGE KIRKHAM, Gymnast) “I went last year (to Nationals). I got seventh all-around.”
“I feel like I’ve gotten a lot better form, a lot mentally stronger and focusing on staying focused on what I’m doing.”
“I love gymnastics! I always have been doing it since I was really little. Whenever you make it to Nationals it feels like all the work pays off.”
(KAITLYN HIGGINS, Gymnast)
“Last year I did really good and I got eighth. Just to even place at Nationals is really good. This year I’m looking to place higher and place in all four events because I only placed on floor and the All-Around event last year.”
“I’ve been doing gymnastics since I was four. I’m 17 so it’s been a while.”
“I’m committed to the University of Minnesota on a full-ride scholarship, so I have five more years.”
(Dani Petrousek, Gymnast)
“I have been to Nationals. This is my third year making it. The last two years I let myself get a little bit intimidated by everyone. Everyone was so talented. This year one of the big things I have to realize is that I’m with them and I’m there for a reason.”
“I think I’m good on focusing on the beam and just not getting too freaked out that I’m on a four inch beam.”
“You have to go out there and give it your all and go big and what happens happens.”
