Golf League Honors WW II Veterans

Golfing at Sandy Hollow is a Thursday morning ritual for several men in Rockford.

That’s when the Al Poggioli Men’s League is held. The League has been around since the 1960s.

This year there are 36 men in it. They have a great time playing nine holes, trading stories and kidding each other. They’re always looking for more members.

“It’s a two-man team. It’s handicapped,” says league secretary Jack Rossato. “We start at six in the morning. Most of us are done and off the course by 8:30. It makes a nice day of it.”

There are several war veterans in the league. Thursday morning they were recognized during a breakfast after their round. Two special ones were recognized. 90 year old Ray Putnam and 89 year old John Rosato. Both men served in the Navy during World War II.

The Poggioli league is finished for this year, but men of any age can signed up for next season by contacting the Rockford Park District.
