Highmore A Propsect On The Rise

When you scan the IceHogs’ roster for up-and-coming prospects for the Blackhawks one of the guys who stands out is winger Matthew Highmore. He has been one of the IceHogs’ most consistent players and he’s only a rookie.

Highmore’s skills were on full display last Wednesday night. That’s when he notched his first professional hat trick. He tallied all three goals in a 3-1 win over Iowa.

“I’m actually not sure when the last one (hat trick) was. It might have been last year, but it felt great! Any way I can help the team,” says Highmore.

That natural hat trick came in only his 18th professional game. That scoring binge wasn’t a fluke. Highmore leads the IceHogs with nine goals.

“I like his approach. He’s very consistent,” says IceHogs head coach Jeremy Colliton. “I think he’s shown he’s got some offense in him.”

Highmore spent the past five seasons playing in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Saint John Sea Dogs. Last season he led Saint John in assists and points and he helped the Sea Dogs win the league championship. So far he has made the leap to the American Hockey League look easy.

“It’s been a process just like everybody else,” says Highmore. “It’s been a lot of fun so far. Luckily I’ve had really good teammates here that have made the transition real easy. The coaches have also helped, so so far so good.”

Highmore wasn’t selected in the NHL drafted. Maybe it was his lack of size that scared off teams. He’s only 5’10, but that hasn’t been an issue.

“I believe everybody has a different path,” says Highmore. “I’ve learned over the years that there’s different ways to get to where you want to be. Not getting drafted obviously motivated me and there may be a little bit of a chip on my shoulder, but I don’t know where I’d be where I am today without not getting drafted. I’m very thankful for the opportunity that I have here and I just take advantage of it every day.”
