Hononegah’s Gio Cassioppi signs with Western Colorado University

ROSCOE, ILLINOIS — The next stop for Hononegah wrestler Giovanni Cassioppi is Western Colorado University. He signed a letter of intent with the Mountaineers Monday night at his Roscoe home.

Cassioppi is a four-time NIC-10 champion. He’s a three-time State qualifier. This past season he finished fifth at the IHSA State Tournament in the 145 pound weight class.

Western Colorado is an NCAA Division II school. It has produced 57 All-American wrestlers. This past season the Mountains finished 24th as a team at the NCAA Division II Nationals.

Cassioppi was more than impressed with his visit to the school. “Just the area around the campus was beautiful and breath-taking, and then the team was amazing,” sais Cassioppi. “Great coaches and great people and teammates. Great guys. So I just decided it was the place for me.”

Cassioppi receives a full-ride scholarship. His older brother Anthony wrestles for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
