As the 2015 football season closes tonight with the National Championship game, the Northern Illinois University Huskies are already looking forward as pieces of the 2016 football schedule are coming together, including the 2016 non-conference schedule and home and away conference opponents released Monday by the Huskies.
NIU will play six home games in 2016 with the home opener set for Saturday, Sept. 17 versus Mountain West Conference Champion San Diego State. The next weekend, NIU will welcome Western Illinois to Huskie Stadium. The Leathernecks advanced to the second round of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Playoffs in 2015.
In conference play, the Huskies will play host to MAC West foes Central Michigan and Toledo, as well as crossover opponents Bowling Green and Buffalo. NIU and Bowling Green have not met in the regular season since 2011 as the last three meetings between the teams have come in Detroit where the two teams have played for the Mid-American Conference Championship each of the last three seasons. NIU and Buffalo meet for the second consecutive season with the Huskies claiming a 41-30 win at Buffalo last year.
NIU’s third opponent from the MAC East is Kent State as the Huskies will play the Flashes at Dix Stadium in Kent, Ohio in 2016. NIU will also travel to play MAC West opponents Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan and Ball State.
In non-conference play, the Huskies are on the road to open the season at Wyoming on Saturday, Sept. 3 in Laramie and travel to Tampa, Fla. the next weekend to take on South Florida on Saturday, Sept. 10.
Dates for the Huskies’ Mid-American Conference games have not been determined and will be announced by the league office at a later date.
