Just one week after firing John Groce the University of Illinois has found it’s new men’s basketball coach.
Former Oklahoma State coach Brad Underwood will take the reigns down in Champaign. Underwood has only been a head coach for four seasons, but his resume is very impressive in that short of amount of time.
Underwood has an overall record of 109-27, and has made the NCAA Tournament in all four seasons. He coached at Stephen F. Austin for three seasons, and then one season with the Cowboys in which they finished 20-13 earning a 10-seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament.
“The Big Ten’s a special conference. Illinois basketball is special, and the timing was absolutely perfect,” says Underwood.
“You look at the improvements his teams have made during his tenures it’s nothing short of remarkable,” says Illinois’ Athletic Director Josh Whitman.
Underwood does have Illinois ties. He was an assistant coach at Western Illinois from 1992-2003.
