It was a rocky start to the basketball season for Fred Van Vleet and Wichita State, but now everything is coming together for the Rockford native and his Shockers.
They’ve won seven straight games to boost their record to 12-5 overall and 6-0 in the MVC. Van Vleet seems to becompletely healthy. It showed Sunday when he scored a career-high 29 points in a 20 point win over Indiana State.
After that game Indiana State coach Greg Lansing called Van Vleet the “Best pure point guard in the country.”
Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall says Van Vleet is clearly stronger than he’s been all season.
“He looked pretty explosive to me. He looked like the old Fred a little bit tonight. He was able to weave his way through traffic a couple times. He was actually finishing.”
Van Vleet is more focused on the team showing improvement. “I mean we’re making progress. All we try to do is come in each day and find something to get better at. We’re finding our groove offensively. I think our rotations are starting to get a little bit more firm.”
Wichita State’s next game will be Wednesday night at Northern Iowa.
