King settling in as IceHogs’ coach

Derek King is three games into his tenure as the head coach of the IceHogs and things are going well.  The IceHogs have won their last two games…both on the road and both against division rivals Milwaukee and Chicago.

King put his guys through a practice session Monday morning before they head back out on the road again for games in Grand Rapids, Texas and San Antonio.
“I think it’s starting to get a little more my team practicewise,” said King. “You know, maybe changing a few things up but so far I haven’t screwed it up too much and things seem to be running smoothly and again when you win it’s a lot easier.”

Things haven’t gone so well for former IceHogs’ head coach Jeremy Colliton with the Blackhawks. They’re dropped all three games since he took over last week. King speaks almost daily with Colliton. King says Colliton is holding up well. He says it’s just going to take a little time for Colliton to get his system firmly in place and get everyone on the same page.

“It’s like it was when he first came here,” says King. “There’s a process in what he wants to do. He’s got to do his steps. You can’t just jump into it and hopefully you win your games without teaching these guys how he wants to play. He’s got great systems and a great way of thinking the game. I think it might take a little bit but once he gets going and those guys by into it it’s going to be fun to watch.”
