Top basketball teams from the state will be converging on Rockford and Rockton this weekend for MLK tournament basketball action.
One tournament will be played at Hononegah. That one has been going strong for 13 years and it will boast another talented field of teams this year including Normal West, Normal, West Auroran and Zion Benton. Hononegah and DeKalb are the two local teams in the tournament.
Other competitiors include Neuqua Valley and Oak Park-River Forest.
“We’re going to put on another great event,” says Hononegah coach Mike Miller. “I really think our tournament is the best of its kind in Ilinois. The teams that we have coming in here are always challenging for state hardware. Some of the players you’re going to see on ESPN in a few years, and it’ll be another great weekend at Hononegah.
Games will be played all day Saturday and Sunday.
At the same time Jefferson will host it’s annual MLK Tournament. Illinois’ third ranked 3A team Peoria Manuel will lead the field. Manuel also has one of the top players in the state in junior guard DaMonte Williams.
Other teams in the field include Deerfield, Johnsburg, Batavia, Bloomington, Chicago Vocational, and Geneva.
Local teams involved will be Belvidere, Harlem, Jefferson, Belvidere North, Guilford, Lutheran, and for the first time Boylan.
“I think it’s right up there this year and it’s probably a little bit deeper,” says Jefferson coach Todd Brannan. “We’re going to play Bloomington, Batavia, Manuel and Geneva. Those are all great programs, and they all have outstanding players who are getting looked at at the next level.”
